Quest For The Cheapest Cruise Lines Of All

I understand that in these economic times, most people don’t cruise-shop for the most extravagant cruise, the one that hits the most ports, or the one with the biggest liners. They go for the one that offers good quality at the lowest prices. And no one can blame the public for this. So who offers the best overall prices?

As recently as the early 1990s, Premier Cruise Line offered some of the most reasonable cruise prices available. They’d specialized in purchasing older ocean liners and converting them into cruise ships, primarily around the tropics. Premier began transporting scads of people to Disney World and was raking in money like autumn leaves. Disney even allowed them to bring Mickey and Goofy on board as guests to charm the families. But then, alas, Disney initiated its own cruise line and yanked the cartoon characters. Then, to make things worse for Premier, Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Lines, and Royal Caribbean began a massive building program of new liners. They grew so large that they could undercut almost any discount cruises Premier put out there. The company finally folded in September of 2000.

There’s one small cruise line left and, at the time of this writing, it still offers the lowest priced package, all things considered. It is the Imperial Majesty Line with its two ships: the Regal Empress and the Ocean Breeze. The prices start at $39 per person per day in the lowest category cabin, and the two-day cruise starts at $45 per day. The ships sail primarily to the Bahamas.

A travel expert claimed recently that of the large cruise lines, the least expensive cruises are offered by Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL), and Royal Caribbean. Of course, a few lines such as Celebrity and Pr

incess occasionally compete with a lower priced package, and Costa is a property of Carnival.

Another situation in which any large cruise line can offer rock-bottom rates is on repositioning cruises. This means that when a liner must be repositioned to a different part of the world, the trip for vacationers is offered at a huge discount. A repositioning cruise such as a trans-Atlantic voyage can cost as little as $32 per person per day.

But, aside from situations like that, Carnival, NCL, and Royal Caribbean usually offer the lowest prices. The briefer cruises are often on older ships but you get some incredible deals. And don’t imagine that just because a ship is older, it is shabby or inferior. In many cases, passengers are not even aware that their liner has been in service longer than others.
Carnival and NCL now offer three-day cruises for $56 per person per day, and you can get a four-night cruise for about $52 per day. If you do a 7-10 day Mexico or Caribbean cruise, your rate will probably be the lowest of all. However, as the economy improves, expect that rates may go up a bit.

I’m not about to try to compare the overall quality of the three most economical cruise lines. Why not book brief cruises with all three and you decide? Or read up on them yourself and decide which one you like the best. However, whatever you decide I seriously doubt that you will come away disappointed, no matter which company you select. Go out there and have some fun.

The Answer: Well that depends… Here’s how it breaks down-

Early season/ before Xmas – If the snowcover is there, then this is a great time to go piste skiing, but head for the tree-lined resorts rather than the rocky ones; that is, if you dont want to shred your skis to bits! (I’ve learnt this the hard way in Meribel!) You will find some fantastic value chalet holidays early on, and if the early snows grace us again, as they have done for the last couple of years (I skiied on Nov 14th in St Gervais is 2009!) then go for it. The pistes will be quiet and so will the resort.

School holidays – Xmas, New Year, Feb half-term, Easter – Avoid them if you can! These weeks will ALWAYS be busy. especially if the early season snow is good . But for those who can only get away in the School holidays, your best bet is to head to somewhere with a big area, but a smaller profile. Head to ‘The Three Valley’s’ or ‘Espace Killy’ and you wont be able to breathe. Look further afield and head to the Four Valleys in Switzerland, the Espace Diamant, or the Evasion Mont-Blanc. Oddly, if you really value your empty pistes, the Christmas day and New Years day are often deserted, so drag yourself out of your chalet and enjoy the pistes to yourselves.

January – It will be cold, with lots of snow and lots of space. The last two January’s have seen loads of snow, yet low queues, making it a great time to head out if you can hack the coldest part of the season. With the cold keeping the snow perfect, January is ideal for those who like to ski hard all day everyday. There will always be cheap weeks going last minute in January, so grab yourself a cheap chalet holiday. This isn’t really a time to come out for sunshine skiing and long lunches though, more of that later!

February – Excluding the English half-term, February should still be a great month to ski, and there will doubtless be plenty of cheap weeks on offer, but be warned… The European half-term’s span over the whole month, and can lead to busy pistes on any day. The best way to avoid them is to head to less well known resorts, or the resorts that seem harder to get to, and will put attract less local holiday-skiers up for the day/weekend.

March – Ask any seasoned skier worth his salt when is the best month to ski? and the answer will be fairly unanimous. March is great for skiing. Low queues, the highest snow level, and the sun starts coming out more and more often, so this is a perfect time for a slightly more relaxed ski holiday, or for families…in fact, for anyone!

April/Late Season – Obviously your choices can be limited by the amount of snow in resort & its closing dates, but April is a great time to come for a relaxed week in the snow and the sun. The lifestyle slows down a little, perfect for those who like to hit the slopes a little later, and have a good long lunch in the sun. No point heading out at 8am now, let the snow soften up for 10am and have a more relaxed week.

There is certain basic information that the financial institution requires in order to make the decision to finance your business. You must come to the appointment with the bank armed with this information, ideally accompanied by your accountant who prepared the information package.

” Financial Statements for the past three years

” Pro forma financial statement for the year to date

” Cashflow projections for the current year

” List of aged accounts receivable

” List of aged accounts payable

” Summary of inventory

From the above documents, the bank will ascertain whether your business was profitable in the past, and whether it appears to be profitable this year.

The cashflow projections will show how high the financial involvement will peak at, and how well the loan will be collateralized at any given time.

The accounts receivable list will disclose the quality of the customers and whether a significant percentage of them is delinquent.

The accounts payable list will reveal whether your business is up-to-date with its payments to suppliers.

The inventory summary will show the nature of the inventory and give an indication of whether it can be sold readily.

In addition to examining the above documentation in detail, be aware that a credit check will be done on the business to ascertain if there is any outstanding litigation, and as to its creditworthiness.

Knowing all this, be sure to have satisfactory explanations for any aspects that may appear detrimental to the bank.

It is important to keep in mind that the ideal customer for an operating line of credit, as far as the bank is concerned, is one who:

” Is profitable

” Needs the credit to finance profitable growth

” Does not require too high a loan/equity ratio

” Has adequate collateral to cover the loan at all times

” Has collateral that can be liquidated easily

” Has excellent credit rating

Your strategy? When making the loan application:

” stress the good value of the assets that support the equity of the business.

” Point out that the inventory is current, or can easily be sold.

” Explain that your accounts receivable are up-to-date and that delinquent receivables have been provided for.

” If you have unencumbered fixed assets, point out that there is additional collateral for the bank in them.

” Advise the bank that you have adequate fire insurance to protect the assets, and personal life insurance that could be used to protect the bank, if necessary.

” Recognise that the banker looks to collateral to repay the loan if the business fails. The banker is not really interested in intangible assets, such as goodwill, even though they could be very valuable.
